Things to Remember
Your horse may start to wander if you tie him or her off with too
much slack during the process. Because he or she will be unbalanced,
this can be dangerous. Be sure to not have undue slack in the rope, but
don’t tie it too tightly either, or your horse may spook.
- Try to train your horse to lift his or her leg on command by saying
something like foot up every time you lift the foot, and foot down
every time you lower it to the ground.
- Gently persuade your horse to shift his or her balance away from
the leg you’re going to be working on by applying pressure in the
direction you want him/her to shift. Don’t go overboard; if your horse
is being stubborn, pushing harder will only annoy both of you.
- Don’t yank the foot up roughly. Be slow and gentle. In the case of
the back hooves, don’t attempt to lift them too high as it’s difficult
for a horse. If you feel your horse pulling away let it go and try
again.
